SEMINARS 1-3: 9:45-11:45 AM

  1. Spiritual and Relational Vitality TOM JOHNSON, National Ministries. An exploration of the dimensions of and issues surrounding spiritual and relational vitality. This is the source of our joyous power and our passionate vocation as Christians. Join us as we focus on this foundational element for individuals and churches so that we can pursue God's vision for our lives individually and corporately.
  2. The Disciple-Making Church YVONNE CARTER, National Ministries. The mission of the Church is to make disciples. (Matthew 28:19-20). Our quest is to discover who we need to be as a local congregation in order to fulfill that mission. In this seminar, participants will be introduced to National Ministries' Nine Qualities of a Disciple-Making Church, and have an opportunity to identify and develop a plan to strengthen at least one specific disciple-making quality in their own congregation.
  3. Seven Steps on the Way of Jesus DAVID SCHIRER, Chestnut Avenue, Concord and MARSHALL SCHIRER, FBC, Wichita, Kansas. Why is it so difficult to share the Gospel message with others? The Gospels provide a blueprint for Christians that takes us through the steps along the way toward living out Jesus' Great Commission. Explore and experience the seven steps

Equipping the Saints for Age Group Ministry
WORKSHOPS 4-9: 12:45-1:45 PM

  1. Teaching Heart to Heart to the Glory of God JOYCE WHITFIELD, Beth Eden, Oakland. Learn how to teach biblical principles and life applications to children.
  2. Youth and the Church: What Do We Have to Offer? ALLISON TANNER, Lakeshore Avenue, Oakland. Like every specialized group in the church, teenagers have unique gifts to offer and specific spiritual needs that the church can meet. This workshop will explore some creative ways churches can connect with their younger members and in the process educate and edify all members of the congregation. We will discuss some of the sticky aspects of church inclusivity of youth, multiple forms of youth spirituality, fostering intergenerational relationships and effective ways to share our faith with the next generation
  3. The Opportunity Group: Are You Missing the Boat? LAUREN NG, First Chinese, San Francisco; MARIE ONWUBUARIRI, MacArthur Community, San Pablo. Church sociologists call young adults age 25-44 the "opportunity group" because they are the demographic found to be most receptive to a spiritual connection with Jesus Christ. Explore the diverse identities of this age group, effective methods for attracting them to your congregation and maintaining them as active members, and recommended resources for doing young adult ministry. Come prepared to learn some surprising facts about the opportunity group and to share from your own experiences as well!
  4. Adult Ministry: Living Life on Purpose RICHARD REAVES, FBC Santa Clara. Everyone needs to live life with meaning and purpose. The problem is that we face too many demands on our time and energies. How do we as adult Christians and as church families make the right choices with the limited resources God has given us? This workshop will challenge you to create your own personal priority list and suggest ways to design a church ministry that is more focused on achieving God's will.
  5. Senior Adult Ministry DOROTHY SPANN-AGEE, Beth Eden, Oakland. Discover an understanding of how to positively respond to persons whose lives are lengthening as they approach 65, 75, and 100 years of age.
  6. Leadership Styles and Ministry / Leadership Assessment BARBARA JIM-GEORGE, Allen Temple, Oakland. Participants will be able to identify the characteristics of an effective leader, identify their own personal leadership styles, describe the importance of switching styles to accommodate the urgency of various tasks, and understand the relationship of leadership to follow-ship.

Equipping the Saints for California Ministry
Workshops 10-15: 2:00-3:00 PM

  1. Creative Stewardship DAVID BENNETT, Growing Healthy Churches (ABCW). Discover creative stewardship strategies that have helped churches increase weekly offerings on average by 17% and with some churches even doubling their income in the next 12 months. We will share how through a little donation, a donor can give a huge gift. Participants will learn steps for churches and individuals to gain financial independence and the best stewardship practices from churches across the country.
  2. Wholly Christian: The Need for Health and Fitness in Our Churches FRANKLIN ONWUBUARIRI, Professional Fitness Trainer and Director of Fit4Christ Ministry, MacArthur Community, San Pablo. As Christians, we are redeemed through Jesus Christ who sacrificed greatly for us-mentally, spiritually, and physically. As we seek to be like Christ in our character, it is also important to shape our lifestyles so that we can be like Christ in our outward witness, which is shaped by our state of health in our body, mind, and spirit. Sadly, this message oftentimes does not come out clearly in our churches today. We often teach about growing spiritually or having the mind of Christ, but we just as often forget to teach about caring for our bodies, which is the temple of God's Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19-20). In this workshop, we will discuss a biblical basis for intentionally including health and fitness in the life of the local church and creative ways to do so, whether or not you have health and fitness industry professionals in your congregation.
  3. "Faith-Based Community Organizing", equipping saints for social action ministry CARLTON RHODEN, Lakeshore Avenue, Oakland. Observe faith-based community organizing as an access point to social involvement for churches. Explore the possibilities.
  4. Church Tech: Creatively Communicating Christ DON JOEL, Thornton Avenue, Fremont. Explore various topics from the world of technology. These topics can range from understanding websites, to podcasting your Sunday Sermons. Come ready to ask your questions, and share what has worked in your church.
  5. Creating An Environment for Change JOAN FRIESEN and LARRY JAY, co-founders of Metamorphosis at Redwood Glen. Ministry in the San Francisco Bay Area provides unique challenges for churches. For some congregations, it is literally a matter of life or death. How do you lead a faith community through change? For Joan and Larry change begins by creating a greater sense of urgency. Using the Congregational Transformation Model, these practitioners have lived through the good, the bad and the ugly. This workshop will provide foundational teaching and tools to prepare you and your congregation for change.
  6. Keeping Children & Youth Safe KAREN YEE, Alameda FBC. "It could never happen here..." Most people can't imagine or don't want to face the reality that child abuse can happen in their church. However, as we have seen in the news, it can happen anywhere. Come learn how to communicate the need for a policy for your congregation, how to set up a policy that protects both the children, youth and the leaders that serve, and how to empower and support those who have been hurt in the past.
