Interfaith

religious symbols

For nearly 40 years, I have been active in interfaith dialogue, study, and relationship building. I began with Jewish/Christian dialogue in the early 1970's and during my theological education had the opportunity to study with the Center for Judaic Studies at the Graduate Theological Union and at Hillel at the University of California, Berkeley.

Since 2002, I has made interfaith work a main focus of my efforts, and founded Interfaith Space, devoted to creating and developing interfaith relationships in the South San Francisco Bay Area. At the Interfaith Space website, there are listings of upcoming interfaith events, links to interfaith organizations in the Bay Area and beyond. I also edit Bay Area Interfaith Connect, the monthly newsletter from the Interfaith Center at the Presidio in San Francisco.

I have served as coordinator of interreligious dialogues for the Silicon Valley Conference for Community and Justice, a member of the SouthBay Interfaith Coordinating Committee, a member of the Silicon Valley Partner City Team, and as Chair of the Steering Committee of the Silicon Valley Interreligious Council.

I blog on interfaith issues at Interfaith Space, and am the San Jose Interfaith Examiner at Examiner.com.

BibleWorkbench

BibleWorkbenchBibleWorkbench is a lectionary based life-centered biblical resource published by The Educational Center for small group youth and adult education in church and home, for individual study or as an aid to preachers. I have been Editor of BibleWorkbench since 2008.

The BibleWorkbench approach involves the use of open-ended questions designed to invite the user into a deep engagement with the biblical text as story. Often, the Workbench study will use non-verbal exercises— artwork, movement, music, visualization— to bring the story to life. It then invites participants to reflect on how the story is alive in the world around them and in their own deepest inward experience.

Each week also includes selections from literature, poetry, news reports and critical background material to enhance the encounter with the text. The BibleWorkbench method owes much to the work of H.B. Sharman, C.G. Jung, The Guild for Psychological Studies, The Educational Center, and Walter Wink's Transforming Bible Study.

For more about BibleWorkbench, see the Educational Center website.

Psychology and Spirituality

I have long been interested in the ways that psychology and spirituality interact, and did my doctoral study in psychological biblical criticism. I have been active in the work of the Psychology and Biblical Studies Section of the Society of Biblical Literature nearly from its beginning in 1991, have published three books in the field and have written dozens of articles and reviews in Psychology and the Bible.

I taught classes in psychology and spirituality in the Pastoral Ministries program at Santa Clara University and in the Counseling Psychology program of Holy Names College in Oakland.

I and my wife, Pamela Bjorklund, Ph.D., a Clinical Psychologist, have for several years taught a class in psychological development and spiritual growth in the Institute for Leadership in Ministry of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Jose.

I have offered several workshops on psychology and the Bible, healthy and unhealthy spirituality, spirituality and personality, and more.

I specialize in websites for religious organizations, academic associations, and nonprofit agencies. If you need a design for a website, assistance in securing a domain name or setting up hosting and configuration settings, contact me.
